Chivas Club History
As with all Mexican clubs founded before the 1940’s Chivas soccer began life as a amateur team made up of mainly French and Mexican players who worked in the clothes store Fabricas de Francia. As an amateur team the club won 12 titles and were one of the most successful amateur clubs in the country.
In 1946 the club turned professional and it was in 1948 the nickname Chivas arrived. Bestowed on the club by the press after a particularly poor display against Tampico the article mentioned the goats had won the game. The Chivas name was meant as an insult but the fans took it to their hearts and the rest, as they say, is history. The club carried on for a few trophyless years but in the mid fifties there was a revival of Chivas soccer fortunes. While all the league clubs were struggling financially the wealthy Guadalajarians took professional soccer in Mexico by storm. Chivas won an unbelievable total of 28 trophies in eight years with the faithfull dubbing the team the “Campeonisimo”.
As the club only signs Mexican player the club was responsible for forming the backbone of the Mexican national team which competed in the 1958 World Cup. Unfortunately their showing at that particular time gave the country the realisation that they had a long way to go to compete with the best in the world.
Through out the seventies and eighties the club had difficulty in competing winning only a handful of trophies, one of which was the ninth league title in 1987.
The 90’s were not much better as the club was beset with financial problems and thing did not improve until Jorge Vergara bought the club for $100million.
Having won only one title in the nineties the fans were desperate for success and they had to wait until 2006 for the club to surpass the league record of 10 titles. This wa even more pleasing given it was the clubs centenary year.
The club also have an association with the MLS by forming a sister club Chivas USA. Jorge Vergaras love of football has also extended to possibilites of Chivas teams in Spain and South Korea.
