History
The club was formed in 1916 as an amateur team playing in the Mexican league. To gain access to the league they had to prove their worth by playing 3 games against established team without losing a game. This was duly done and the team became a member of the league.
In 1942 the club joined the national league having previously played regional football. America did not find much success in the early stages. The club did not build on their amateur successes and had to wait until 1953-54 to win their first Mexican Cup (Campeón de Copa).
It was to be another 11 years until Club Americas won the league for the first time. This set the stage for their shared dominance of Mexican football with Chivas. These two clubs are also the only teams in Mexico to have played in every season of the top flight.
The club continued to go from strength to strength winning two league title in the 70’s. The 80’s were the most successful period in the clubs history with America winning five Mexican Championships and 2 Mexican Supercups.
During the nineties the club fell from from grace. This period was fruitless on the domestic front despite the club spending heavily on big names from South America. It was in the year 2002 that Americas won the league for the first time in 13 year winning the championship in 2002 and their tenth title in 2005.
The Stadium
Club Americas have the distinct fortune to play on one of the most famous football pitches on the planet. The players have the envious job of gracing their skill in front of fans at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
This is the very stadium made famous by Pele et al in the 1970 World Cup and again by Maradona in 1986. With a capacity of over 126,000 this has to be one of the greatest places on earth to play soccer.
