Founded in 1994 by the late Lamar Hunt, Columbus Crew began playing their games at “the horseshoe”. This is the ground more famous for the other type of football in america being home to Ohio State Universities American football team. The capacity of this Stadium is 101,568 This wasn’t really suited to creating a great atmosphere for a soccer team that was attracting an average crowd of 16,000 – 18,000 fans.
In 1999 the team moved to the Columbus Crew Stadium on 1 Black and Gold Boulevard.. The capacity of the ground is 22,500 with capabilities to expand to 30,000 at some stage should there be a need for the capacity.
On the Pitch
On the playing front the crew have had limited success. The highlight of this was winning the US Open Cup in 2002 by beating MLS Cup champions
La Galaxy
2-1 in the final.
