Cruz Azul History
The Cruz Azul soccer team was founded in 1927 as an amateur works team of the cement works Cemento Cruz Azul.
The club played as amateurs until 1960 when the then administration of the club decided to join the Professional ranks of the Mexican second division. The Deportivo Cruz Azul team won promotion to the Primera division in 1964 finishing eighth in their first season in the top flight. The club continually improved until the first of eight championships was won in 1969. Unlike some of the other Mexican Soccer teams Cruz Azul have won the eight championships in a relatively short period having only been promoted to the Primera division in 1964. This tally of eight titles was reached by the club winning six of them in between 1970 and 1980. This dominance of Mexican football in the 70’s led to the Locomotive knick name. The club was less fortunate in the 80’s and early 90’s having to wait until the 1997 season to record their eighth league title. They have come close since but never quite delivered. The last title that fell from their grasp was at the quarter final stage in 2006 when a defeat at the hands of
Chivas
ended their title aspirations. One of the latest highlights for the Deportivo Cruz Azul side was a 3-1 win against south American giants Boca Juniors 3-1. To get the latest upto date information visit the
