English Premiership

The English Premiership is the most high profile league in the world, with the some of the best known soccer teams and strips in the world. The red of Arsenal , Liverpool , Manchester United and the blue of Chelsea are known around the world due to the global media coverage and money that now flows through the game at that level.

Man Utd Premiership winners for season 2007 – 2008 are arguably the most well known team on the planet. Fans of Glasgow Celtic and Real Madrid may disagree but there is no doubt that the English premiership as a league has what is now called a global brand. That is partly due still to romanticism people have for the top clubs in the premiership and partly the marketing of the league itself which has been magnificent.

English Premiership History
Firstly the premier league was born on 20 February 1992. The need to restructure the game from the final years of the old first division was apparent. Clubs were facing financial difficulties because they had to redevelop grounds into all seater stadiums in the wake of Lord Justice Taylor’s recommendations. Clubs were also beginning to struggle to compete with the top European clubs for players therefore something had to be done to counteract this and bring more money into the game.

The first league season was the 1992 -1993 under the stewardship of the premier league with Manchester United running out winners by ten points from Aston Villa. Although league is considered to be the most competitive in the world only a handful of team are capable of winning the race to the title. This is clear when you realise that out of the fifteen years the league has only be won by four different clubs. Those Clubs are Manchester United (9), Arsenal (3), Chelsea (2) and Blackburn (1).

Whether a provincial club like Blackburn could ever win the premiership again remains to be seen. Every supporter begins the first day of the season hoping something special will happen and players will perform to levels above and beyond the call of duty but the reality is that the structure and finance of four or five clubs give them the capabilities to last the course.

The relationship with the premier league and television led to an explosion of wealth initially £191 million over five seasons with the last contract valued at over £1 billion pounds for 3 seasons.

Television revenue has transformed the league into arguably the best domestic league in the world. Some of the finest players in the world have been attracted to the league which only verifies the esteem with which it is held.
