Manchester United Shirts - Champions of Europe

Yet again Manchester United conquer Europe with a great display in Moscow to become European champions for the third time.

It was almost as if this was meant to be after a great first half followed by an indifferent second half led to extra time.

In a game that had everything Man U rode their luck with Chelsea hitting the woodwork twice. After the extra time stalemate Chelsea somehow managed to steal defeat from the jaws of victory and yet again the red half of Manchester were exstatic.

The hero of the hour was Ronaldo and hew would have become the villian if it had not been for the heroics of the United goal keeper Van der Sar.

Manchester United History
Manchester United is arguably the biggest football club on the planet. This makes it even more interesting that this now great football club started from humble beginnings. The original name of the club was Newton Heath L&YR F.C. which was formed in 1878 as a works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath.

The clubs shirts were green and gold, the colours which were revived in the away strip in the 1990’s, with the team playing for fifteen years on a small dilapidated field on the North Road.

The club than moved to the town of Clayton in 1893 and played at Bank Street. In 1892 the club entered the football league and began the move to becoming an independent company.

After coming close to bankruptcy the club was saved by managing director of Manchester Breweries, J. H. Davies. After much deliberation over names Manchester United was chosen over Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic. It was then, on 26 April 1902 that Manchester United F.C. Came into existence.

The club moved to Old Trafford in 1910 and the first game was a loss to Liverpool 4-3 after being 3 goals up. For the first 41 years at the theatre of dreams the club failed to lift the first division title and it was not until 1952 that the club won the title back under the rein of the legendary Scot Sir Matt Busby. What followed was a mixture of success and tragedy. The Munich air disaster resulted in the death of eight players and fifteen passengers. The team minus nine players still managed to get to the final of the FA Cup and the come second in the league.

The team was then rebuilt around players such as Dennis Law, George Best and Pat Crerand. The culmination of the rebuilding was the winning of the European Cup in 1968 beating Benfica 4-1 in the final.

From 1969 – 1986 the club struggled to meet the high standards set by Busby. The lowest point was one of the worst moments in Dennis Laws life when wasn't wearing a Manchester United shirt He relegated Man United while scoring for Man City in the local Derby.

Sir Alex Ferguson
1986 enter Alex Ferguson. After a slow start, which almost led to the Manchester United Board making the biggest mistake of sacking the manger, Sir Alex as he is now called turned the clubs fortunes around. After 4 years Manchester United finally won the Cup in 1990 and the European cup winners cup in 1991.

In the 1993-94 season, with the help of Eric Cantona, and Ryan Giggs the league and cup double was won. Manchester United again managed this feat in 1995-96 season with the introduction of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Phil Neville becoming the first team in England to win the double twice.

The pinnacle of Alex Ferguson’s reign a manger came in the 1998-99 season when Manchester United won the treble. They became the only club ever to win the League, FA Cup and Uefa Champions League in the one season. The champion’s league was won with an amazing comeback which stunned Bayern Munich with United winning with almost the last kick of the ball.
