Monarcas Club History
Formed in 1924 the club was initially called Gold then Gold Morelia. The club became professional in 1951 when it entered the newly created second division of the Mexican Football league.
The club gained promotion to the Primera division in 56-57 at the expense of relegated Club Puebla where they stayed until 1967-68 before being relegated back down.
In 1973 the club was bought by Nicardo Ortiz who set about restructuring the club and changing the name to Atletico Morelia S.A. of C.V. The team had to wait until the 1980-81 season before they won promotion again under the stewardship of Diego Malta.
Yet another name change occurred in 1999 as the team became Club Atletico Monarcas Morelia or simply Monarcas Morelia as they are known today. With the latest name change came the clubs greatest success when the club won its first and only title to date. Monarcas captured the Invierno 2000 which is the winter cup by beating Club Toluca in a penalty shootout at Tolucas Bombonera Stadium.
Monarcas Stadium The club took the decision to build a new stadium in the late 1980’s due to capacity constraints of the old Venustiano Carranza stadium where the club had played for many years. On April 9 1989 the Stadium Jose Maria Morelos and Pavón, located on the outskirts of the Quinceo mountain, was opened. The opening game was against arch rivals
Club America
which brought in an over capacity crowd of around 50,000 people. There was obviously standing room only on this first game. The club remain at the Monarcas Morelos Stadium to this day but have yet to win a trophy in front to their home crowd. In an attempt to develop football and commercial activities at Monarcas the football club have struck up an alliance with United States team
Chicago Fire
who currently play in the MLS. This relationship is to learn from each other on the coaching and youth development fronts as well as sharing ideas relating to each clubs business practices. For more information and latest updates on the club visit the
