History of Red Bull New York
Soccer in New York has always attracted a few stars. I particularly remember the New York Cosmos team of the Seventies. I am also very envious that many New Yorkers had the opportunity to see Pele the beautiful game in their own city for their own club.

The New York Red Bulls were formed from the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars in 1996. Considered to be a bit of a mouthful the name simply became the Metro stars from 1998 to 2006. After being bought over by the drinks company Red Bull in 2006 the name was changed to the current name Red Bull New York.

During it’s existence the Red Bulls, as they are affectionately known by their fans, The team have played at the Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With average crowd of around 14,000 for 2006 there is a need to move from the 80,242 capacity stadium.

A new stadium is planned for 2009. The Red Bull stadium will be built in Harrison, New Jersey with a more realistic capacity of 25,000. With a soccer specific stadium the atmosphere in the ground during matches should be much improved.

Proposed Red Bull Park An Illustration of the proposed stadium can be seen here.

The club are also in the process of building a new training centre in Hanover, New Jersey. This will be the playing and commercial centre of the club. Hopefully this will give he club a lift and a good base to widen it's fan base.

On the Pitch
On the playing side there was a great expectation of success for the club. From the outset the New York Red Bulls signed big names such as Roberto Donadoni from AC Milan and 1994 US World Cups stars Tony Meola and Tab Ramos. As in so many cases big names don’t always guarantee success. This was certainly the case with the Metro Stars.

Even with the influx of stars such as Roberto Donadoni, Branco, Lothar Matthäus, Adolfo Valencia, Youri Djorkaeff and Amado Guevara the MetroStars have been extremely inconsistent.

The MetroStars hit the headlines in 2003 with the export of Tim Howard to Manchester United. This was a blow to the team to lose an asset such as Howard but a great move for his career.

Success at Last
The only real success was the winning in Spain of the La Manga Cup in 2004. This was a friendly tournament set up to accommodate teams who play through a summer season. Usual participants are clubs from countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. The tournament win resulted in the team beating Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev 3-2 in the semifinal. The final was a 1-0 victory over Viking FK of Norway to secure the Cup.
