Real Salt Lake Soccer
Founded in 2004 Real Salt Lake, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, play their home games at the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium. The stadium saga of the Salt Lake Soccer team has to be seen to be believed which I will talk about further on.
The Real Salt Lake soccer kit consists of a home jersey of red with royal blue swishes down the side and royal blue sleeves. The away jersey is all white with red flashes down each side panel. There is also a pre game shirt used for warm ups before the game which is yellow and royal blue.
One of the best places to pick up Real Salt Lake kit is the
Official MLS Gear website.
Alternatively there is a host of RSL soccer gear at
World Soccer shop.com.
Real Madrid
The club name is derived from the Spanish name meaning royal in English. As such the club has initiated a relationship with Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The relationship with Real Madrid has resulted in a 10 – year co-operation agreement. This is designed to contribute to one of the first youth development system in the MLS at the cost of $25million. Real Madrid plan to pay half the cost. This will, hopefully, develop youth players to play at the highest level. The only other team in the MLS to propose this so far has been
Red Bull New York.
There are other benefits to this relationship two of which are biennial matches between the two teams and the use of Real Madrid’s training facilities in Spain.
On the Pitch
On the playing front the club are very young and as such have struggled to contend with the more experienced outfits in the both the Western and Eastern conferences of the MLS. The club finished 5th and 6th respectively in the 2005 and 2006 campaigns therefore missing the play-offs.
Real play their nearest rivals,
Colorado Rapids,
in the Rocky mountain cup each year. The winner of this is the team who has amassed the most points over the season with Colorado coming out on top in the first two seasons.
The Stadium
The saga to end all sagas. This Stadium has been on and off and back on again. There have been threats to pull the team out of Utah all together. However there is now a plan in place to build a $110 million soccer specific stadium at Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. The stadium is expected to hold around 20,000 people and is planned to be open in 2008.
