Soccer Fitness Training – Get The Most From Your Game.

Soccer fitness training is one of the most important aspects of your game. The game of soccer is played at a frenetic pace and is somewhat unique in the world of sport. Soccer places demands on your body that other sports cannot get close to.

Yes, soccer is a simple game when played well but to get the very best out of the beautiful game being in top physical condition is of paramount importance. You can have all the skill in the world but if you cannot last the 90 minutes a game lasts then you will never perform at your best.

If you’re not at your best then you will not enjoy the game nearly as much than if you had prepared for the season with a good soccer conditioning program.

So how do you get there?

To improve your fitness for soccer fitness it is important to have training drills to concentrate on specific areas of your game. But you also have to be practical and tailor the drills to either the level you are coaching at or playing at.

By this I mean the level based on the time available and not the ability of the player. If you take your soccer seriously and would like to progress then you will have to put in more sessions – most probably in your own time away from the team environment.

The different areas to give consideration to are

Soccer Fitness Training - Warm Ups – Warming up is something a lot of players take for granted. Make sure you have a set of Soccer Warm up drills to allow you to warm up gradually and safely. The reason for this is to prevent muscle damage and resultant injury.

Every player I know has at some stage of their career pulled muscles due to insufficient warm ups. Don’t let it happen to you. Gradually warm up by walking – stretching – jogging – stretching – light running – stretching – ¾ pace running - stretching. You should have a sweat up by the end of the warm up and be ready to get into a session or game.

Soccer Fitness Training - Endurance Training – Stamina is important for soccer players. Unlike other sports there are no time outs and there is an incredible amount of movement required during the 90 minutes.

The average player will run in the region of 6 – 8 miles. That coupled with the fact that the type of running is split between sprinting and jogging makes it even more demanding.

The great thing about endurance is that this area of fitness is being worked on at all times during the session. There are however some keys to improving your soccer endurance.

Soccer Fitness Training - Speed Training – Soccer speed is fairly unique due to the power required to get you over the first five yards. We have all heard the expression the “first five yards are in your head” but if you can’t get there in first place then it doesn’t really matter how quickly you think.

The sharpness in your mind must be matched by the speed across the ground. To increase your speed you need to add soccer speed training drills into your routine. These consist of various of explosive sprints over varying distances to improve your ability to get into positions ahead of opponents or to the ball first.

Soccer Fitness Training - Agility Training – Soccer agility training is the key to swift changes in movement during play. This coupled with increased muscle strength can result in an explosive combination which should enable player to increase sharpness both on and off the ball.

Agility training drills should include explosive changes in direction both with and without the ball. Using the ball during any conditioning training break up the routine, add variety to the session and bring in more match type scenarios.

It is however important to carryout a portion of the drills without the ball to get the full explosive potential from the drill. Another important factor is to introduce a choice where players have to choose to change direction. This not only improves physical agility but also promotes mental agility allowing players to react more quickly while they are under pressure during a match.

Soccer Fitness Training - Flexibility Training – Soccer flexibility not only helps prevent injury but also allows player to improve both technical and athletic performance. Soccer flexibility training reduces muscle tightness and results in less muscle tears because the elasticity of the muscles has increased allowing a greater range of motion.

This is only one of many injury prevention attributes to improved flexibility. There is more however to flexibility than prevention. On the more positive side soccer flexibility training can result in greater speed and power across the ground as muscles apply force over a larger range of motion. This helps with players ability to jump higher and greater reach when going into tackle opponents.
